Every time I see the the All State Insurance commercials that ask, “Are you in Good Hands?,” I think to myself… “I hope I am.”
No one ever wants to be faced with the situation of having a devastating loss or crisis, and especially without the insurance to cover the disaster. For many churches that face the reality of a fire or a natural disaster, this is a real feeling and question.
Earlier this week I visited a church in Indiana that had survived a fire in 1989. For the church, it was a very defining moment, and it became one that really caused them to rally around their ministry.
By facing the challenge of rebuilding, the church also asked itself, how it could rebuild its facility in a way that would better serve their community, as well as their church membership. And today, they have a beautiful facility that is perfect for housing their ministry.
As a pastor, I didn’t often think about the insurance policy on our facility, but about one time a year, I would fill out the various paper work to renew our policy. Quickly I would read through the basic terms and double check the contact info, but I never took the time to really read through the details.
After visiting this church, I realize that I may have left our church unprotected, and thus I would encourage you to dust off your policy and double check it for coverage. If you need help, I would suggest you talk with a lawyer or call your insurance agent.
And if you are looking for a good insurance company, or for specific help, I would recommend you call the Insurance Board (UCCIB), who has helped many churches and congregations (In my own work, I can attest for their ministry and ability to help local churches).
